This ambitious work was inspired by the Les Cheneaux region in northern Michigan. Written in the form of a suite each movement describes a different element of this area steeped in colorful history and beauty. ?I. EarlyExploration? is a bold statement with stirring brass and powerful percussion writing. ?II. Onomonee? is reminiscent of the early native people to inhabit the region and features a solo Indian Flute (opt. recorderor flute) along with contemporary harmonies and rhythm patterns. ?III. Huron Nocturne? is a marvelously lyric movement which features the woodwinds. ?IV. New Beginnings? brings this impressive work to aclose with an energetic 6/8 pulse and spirited melodies. (8:15)
