This work for soprano tenor and baritone soloists chorus and orchestra was commissioned by the National Confederation of Music Societies to celebrate its Jubilee in 1985 with funds made available by the Arts Council of GreatBritain. The first performance was given in London on 13th April 1985 by the London Symphony Chorus (chorus master Simon Joly) and the City of London Sinfonia conducted by Richard Hilcox.The title of this work refers not onlyto the use of the words of St John the Divine but also to the four poems that are set alongside them. These poems are all visionary and revelatory and deal either directly or by suggestion with ideas of St John.Vocal scorewith piano reduction of the orchestral parts.
