In this volume gentleness and expressiveness prevail. With its slow tempo and dolce opening indication the well-known melody Après un rêve floats a legato song that goes straight to the heart as doesTristesse with its fluid subtle melodic gesture. While Le Papillon et la Fleur still bow to the aesthetics of the romance the Absent (also based on Hugo’s verse) erects a vast dramatic narrative with very simple means. Au Cimetière completes this selection of melodies that is enhanced by two originally instrumental pieces the Berceuse Op. 16 for Violin and Piano and the Romance sans paroles No. 3 for Piano.
