Even today, it is considered one of the milestones of the entire piano literature. Although its epithet did not appear until more than ten years after Beethoven's death, its tonal language is dominated by an incomparable drama. The new edition is based on Beethoven's autograph and the first edition. It is supplemented by surviving galley proofs of the first edition, some with corrections and revisions by the composer. The subsequent changes have been incorporated into the new edition and even reveal 'unheard notes' in the middle movement for a long time, calling into question an almost 200-year-old playing and listening tradition.
