SATB choir, a cappella - Difficult
SKU: PL.9322
Composed by Randall Giles. Cathedral. Choral, General, Lent. Octavo. Paraclete Press #9322. Published by Paraclete Press (PL.9322).
Giles' poignant version of this 16th century English text is set in the traditional English carol form with verses and a burden or refrain. The frequent unison lines are laced with chromatic turns of phrase, illuminating the passion inherent in this prayer. Only at the text Blessed Jesu does Giles expand the texture vertically to bring special attention to the name of Jesus. Giles also thougthfully works each voice in the middle and upper registers with a stillness of rhythm, adding yet another dimension of serenity to this prayer for peace.
Ave Maria, gracia Dei plena; There is no rose; A Carol for Peace; Jesu for thy mercy endless are all push the envelope pieces (epecially the second), and for that reason are worth a look by composers who are interested in seeing some of the current outer limits for church and choral music. As for performance, they are for advanced church groups or college choirs only. Not for the timid! - Association of Anglican Musicians Journal.
