The musicians who commissioned this piece asked for a piece that should be as full of effects and as virtuosic as possible. The two parts of the title clarify a symbiosis of tonal languages: "time in_time out", an energetic piano trio, contains contemporary elements before a clearly discernible modern jazz background. "Time" is the most important element of jazz phrasing, the correct phrasing, the "timing" is essential for the "groove". This composition contains two each of melodic and rhythmical motives, both "in time" in the sense of even time signature and rubatoless phrasing and in "time out", that is, odd time signatures which sometimes also are to be taken more freely. The melodic writing seems to have been held consciously simple and is partly pentatonic. The harmonic structure, however, consists of much more complex chord layers, these are also called "voicings" in Jazz. In spite of all harmonic and melodic jazz influences this composition is not a jazz piece in traditional sense. This symbiosis of tonal language is in the tradition of works by Chick Corea and Billy Childs, and by the "classics", Prokofjev, Bernstein and Previn.
