Few 20th century composers focussed their creative energies as thoroughly on the renewal of musical theatre as Kurt Weill. Three years before his death he wrote retrospectively: 'Since realising, at the age of 19, that the musical theatre is my proper domain, I have consistently tried to solve the formal problems of musical theatre in my own way.' A perusal of Weill's writings clearly shows the continuity in his artistic endeavours throughout his different creative phases and changes of environment (Germany, France, USA).
