Schutz probably wrote the concerto for a major political occasion in connection with the Thirty Years' War. He hauntingly set the plea for God's help and peace throughout the land, sometimes in unison or for duet with echo passages, sometimes for tutti, but always in harmonically exciting fashion leading to the vision that finally justice and peace kiss.
