Guernica, a peaceful town in the Basque region of Spain, was reduced to ruins on the 26th of April 1937 by Nazi bombers. It was a totally unexpected attack that happened while the crowded open-air market was in progress. Over 1600 innocent citizens were killed.This was one of the most senseless and abhorrent war crimes in history. In this new work by Jan Hadermann the music of the Basque region can clearly be heard, with street musicians adding lustre to the open-air market with dance music. Spring is in the air when suddenly from behind the mountaintops, the death squad appears and all hell breaks loose. The work ends with an intense plea to never let anything like this happenagain. Guernica, een vredig stadje in het Spaanse Baskenland, werd op 26 april 1937 door nazi bommenwerpers volledig in puin gelegd. Die aanval vond totaal onverwacht plaats terwijl de drukbezochte openluchtmarkt volop aan de gang was. Meerdan 1600 onschuldige burgers werden gedood. Dit is een van de meest zinloze en weerzinwekkende oorlogsmisdaden uit de geschiedenis. In het stuk Guernica van Jan Haderman horen we hoe de Baskische muziek klinkt: straatmuzikantenluisteren de openluchtmarkt op met dansmuziek. Het is lente. Dan duikt plotseling vanachter de bergtoppen het doodseskader op en barst de hel los. Het werk eindigt met een intense smeekbede zoiets nooit meer te laten gebeuren. Eenontroerend nieuw werk voor harmonieorkest.

Guernica, eine friedliche, strategisch eher bedeutungslose Stadt im Baskenland in Spanien, ist durch einen furchtbaren Blitzangriff von Nazibombern im Jahr 1937 zum Symbol fur die Sinnlosigkeit und Grausamkeit von Kriegsverbrechen und Terror geworden. Im Stuck Guernica ist die frohliche Musik der Basken herauszuhoren, bevor die Holle des Angriffs losbricht. Das Werk endet mit der eindringlichen Bitte, so etwas nie wieder geschehen zu lassen. Ein eindrucksvolles Werk mit einer nach wie vor aktuellen Botschaft.
